“Nestled beneath the dramatic eastern scarp of the Sierra Nevada the Alabama Hills are a wonderland of granite boulders and arches that provide a feast for the photographer’s lens. This rich landscape of sculpted rock creates a spectacular foreground for towering Lone Pine Peak and Mt. Whitney. In this other worldly landscape many unique photographs are waiting to be revealed among the countless shapes created by the weathered rock.”

Paul Dileanis, Photographer/Instructor

The Alabama Hills have long been a favorite of Photographers and the Motion Picture industry. Hundreds of movies and TV shows, beginning in the 1920s, have been filmed in and around the Alabama Hills. The Lone Ranger TV series, Gunga Din and more recent movies such as Gladiator just to name a few.

Throughout this workshop we will have plenty of time to photograph many of the iconic Alabama Hills locations at sunrise, sunset, and at night. We will also have time to explore new photographic opportunities with the goal of creating images that express your own unique vision.

The emphasis during the workshop will be on photographing landscapes by day and night. In this workshop you will learn tips for daylight and dusk photography, proper exposure techniques for Raw or jpeg, and how to use neutral density filters to improve your photography. Composition and style will be taught throughout the day.

Night and Milky Way Photography

During the workshop you will learn to prepare and setup a camera for night shooting, how to paint with light as well as proper exposure for a starry night sky and the Milky Way.

We will be visiting the Alabama Hills just prior to the dark skies of the New Moon cycle.  April is the beginning of the Milky Way season in this hemisphere. The Milky Way will be low on the horizon at this time of year.  The Optimum time to photograph the Milky Way will be between 1:30 AM and 3:30 AM.

We will be taking a break mid-day to rest up and get ready for the evening field work. During this time there will be an afternoon presentation about image processing and planning your landscape photography adventures as well as time to schedule one on one sessions with the instructor.

The Workshop Fee Includes 2.5 days/3 nights of classroom and field instruction.

Lodging, meals, transportation, and park entrance fees (when applicable) are not included in the workshop fee. You are free to stay anywhere in the Lone Pine Area.

Dow Villa Hotel: I have reservations at the Dow Villa Hotel. This is where we will meet for presentations and critique sessions. The Hotel is holding 8 rooms for the workshop until March 28. Upon registration you will receive a discount code for the hotel.  http://www.dowvillamotel.com
